Bean Blossom Jamboree Foundation

Preserving the traditions of the Bill Monroe Music Park

Very Important Announcement from the BBJF June 11, 2011

Dear Friends, Donors, and Supporters of the Bean Blossom Jamboree Foundation:

We first set out a little over three years ago to establish a non-profit organization that could serve as a gathering point for the bluegrass music community, where we could pool our efforts, seek civic and corporate support, and by doing so achieve our main goal of acquiring the Bill Monroe Music Park located in Brown County Indiana and preserving this historic site as a non-profit entity for future generations.  We started our efforts by communicating to the public at large, primarily festival goers and other fans of the music.  We received overwhelming positive responses from the public all over the world and our effort has been propelled by rank-and-file individual support from donors like you.

As we promised in our mission statement, our volunteer officers and board members worked tirelessly for three years exploring every funding option possible, from loans to installment agreements to private-public partnerships to sponsorships to major corporate donations and more.  On our website, we have provided a  partial list of public and private individuals and organizations we formally approached for support.  A few gave us small donations ($1,000 or less), many told us they could not support us at the current time, and many others also indicated no interest.  However, we could not have even approached these donors if it had not been for your individual support.  The economic downturn in 2008 coincided with our start and severely hampered our efforts.  While this has hurt us with the big donors, tough times did not deter the individual donors, and for that we are extremely grateful.

We want you to know that the funds we have raised have been used solely to advertise, seek civic and corporate support from “big donors,” cover operating expenses, and to promote bluegrass in ways such as the Bluegrass Youth Boot Camp.  While we hired a professional fundraiser to approach large donors in late 2010, all board members and officers have been 100% volunteer, including free legal, business, and marketing expertise, and have not even sought mileage reimbursements or similar expenses.  Despite our best efforts, funds are now low, and prospects of purchasing the park at the current time are narrow.  For this reason, we are not actively seeking individual donations at this time.  If opportunities present themselves in the future, the BBJF will remain a vehicle to pursue those opportunities.  Until then, our mission allows us to set shorter term goals.  We intend to maintain the Memorial Wall at the park and use the proceeds to help promote local bluegrass and fund educational activities like the Youth Boot Camp.  We invite anyone who might be interested in a leadership position in the BBJF to contact us, because there will be a great opportunity this year to help define and guide the Foundation’s mission in the future.

Again, we thank you for your support over the past three years.  We regret that we have not yet been able to raise the funds necessary to purchase the park, but we our encouraged that the park’s ownership remains committed to seeing the park preserved and hope that by infusing some new leadership and new ideas, the BBJF can continue to do good for the bluegrass community.

Sincerely,

Volunteer Leadership, Officers, and Board Members

2009 Update! January 25, 2009

Filed under: Press — hoperiver @ 2:58 am

Dear Friends, Donors, Supporters, and those with an interest in the BBJF,

It’s hard to believe that another year has arrived and that we are in 2009!  About this time in 2008 we began our discussions on forming the Bean Blossom Jamboree Foundation and successfully launched our efforts in May of 2008. We have had many reasons to celebrate our success in 2008, especially the success of  nearly $25,000.00 in funds that were pledged in June at the annual Summer Festival. Just prior to the Uncle Pen Days Festival in September, we officially received our Not for Profit 501 (c) 3 status from the Internal Revenue Service.  By the end of 2008 we had pledged support of just under $45,000 in merchandise sales, direct donations, and in-kind services.  That was incredible given the current economy!

As we embark on our goals for 2009, we need to remember that our goal for 2008 was raising awareness. The money we raised in 2008 would not have served us well without the publicity and campaign efforts that occured.  The investment of your dollars in 2008 was succesful, as people all over the world know about the BBJF! Just ask Shigo Nidea of Japan who recently donated $5000.00 to our efforts. Thank you very much for your support in 2008! We wouldn’t be where we are today without your efforts.

For 2009 we are committed to putting 100% of all raised dollars toward purchase of the music park by building on our 2008 efforts and hard work. We are using remaining 2008 funds to hire grant writers and researchers to explore alternative funding sources for our efforts.  Your dollars are being used wisely to help raise awareness and garner more funds to help us purchase, preserve, and ultimately maintain in perpetuity the events that occur at the Bill Monroe Memorial Music Park and Campground.

I ask that you consider matching your 2008 Donation in 2009. Donor levels will be essentially the same for 2009 as in 2008. If you visit our website at www.bbjfoundation.org, you can make a secure donation.  Please consider supporting our cause for 2009! We need your help.

More information will be coming to you soon, including the 2008 Annual Report. If you still support our mission, vision, and goals, we need you to make this a reality.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish everyone the best for 2009 and we look forward to seeing you in June for the Festival!

Sincerely,

Steve Johnson MBA, MHS-CL

Bean Blossom Memorial Brick Wall Project December 5, 2009

Memory Brick Wall

The Bean Blossom Jamboree Foundation has announced the Bean Blossom Memorial Brick Wall Project located at the Bill Monroe Music Park & Campground in Bean Blossom, Indiana.  In keeping with the goal of the Foundation, they are offering bricks for “adoption” to fans of the numerous Bean Blossom music festivals and the Father of Bluegrass Music, Bill Monroe.  The memorial wall will be located near the famous Bean Blossom sign at the fork in the road near the music stage.

The fully tax deductible price will be $100 a brick this year, and includes custom engraving worded by the brick donor.  Each brick will include 3 lines of text and 12 spaces per line. Once the wall goes up, the price will go up to $125 per brick due to the cost increase of engraving while the bricks are already in place. The bricks will be set in available areas at random. For questions or email orders, please send to: donations@bbjfoundation.org

Order forms and online orders are available at www.bbjfoundation.org or can be mailed to: BBJF, c/o Bill Monroe Music Park, 5163 North State Road 135, Morgantown, Indiana 46160. A PDF order form is available here.

The Foundation has already received numerous orders for memory bricks and much enthusiasm from fans and patrons of the park. The bricks made an excellent gift of fans bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, The Bill Monroe Music Park and its many festivals for birthday, Christmas, Anniversary or other gifts.

More about Bean Blossom:
This legacy began in October 1951, when Grand Ole Opry star and the Father of Bluegrass Music, Bill Monroe traveled to a small town in Brown County, Indiana called Bean Blossom to perform at the Brown County Jamboree. He immediately fell in love with the area and two months later purchased the property. In June 1967, he started his first festival at the park that has continued uninterrupted ever since – making the annual June Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival the world’s oldest continuously running bluegrass festival. Some of the biggest names in bluegrass music and stars of the Grand Ole Opry still continue to perform on the famous stage. The park plays host to numerous events and festivals every year including the popular Bill Monroe Bluegrass Hall Of Fame & Uncle Pen Days Festival held every September. After Bill Monroe’s death in 1996, his former Blue Grass Boy band member, Dwight Dillman purchased the festival grounds and museum from James Monroe.

State Highway 135 that runs through Bean Blossom was designated the “Bill Monroe Memorial Highway” by the Indiana General Assembly, and the annual June Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival was designated a Local Legacy by the Library of Congress. The same event also won the prestigious Event of the Year in 2000 from the International Bluegrass Music Association.

The Foundation Board of Directors and Advisory Committee members will be at April 17, 2010 concert and the upcoming Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Festival to meet with attendees, provide more information and answer questions. Interviews can be scheduled or other press inquiries can be made by contacting the Foundation Offices at 1-877-989-BBJF or by email at info@bbjfoundation.org More information is available at the Foundation’s website at: http://www.bbjfoundation.org
